Brave 1.97.57: Chromium 155.0.8059.80 security bump
Brave desktop Release 1.97.57 (October 14, 2026) upgrades Chromium to 155.0.8059.80, matching Chrome's mid-cycle security set. How home users update, relaunch, and verify brave://version.

If Brave is the browser you actually use at home, last week’s Chromium 155 jump is not the finish line. On October 14, 2026, Brave shipped Release Channel 1.97.57, which upgrades Chromium to 155.0.8059.80.
That Chromium line matches the mid-cycle package Google put into Chrome Stable 155.0.8059.79/.80 on October 13 (our Chrome note). Brave’s earlier 1.97.56 Release landed on Chromium 155.0.8059.40. Updating Chrome does not update Brave. Updating Brave does not update Chrome.
What Brave published
Brave’s Release Notes for v1.97.57 (October 14, 2026) and the matching Release Channel 1.97.57 community post list:
- Upgraded Chromium to 155.0.8059.80 (changelog points at Chromium 155.0.8059.80)
- Fixed Tor windows that could fail to connect to the Tor network in certain cases
- Removed the “Payment methods and other info from Brave Wallet” sync data type toggle
For a home security checklist, the Chromium line is the reason to install today. The Tor fix matters if you use Brave’s Tor windows. The wallet sync toggle change is housekeeping.
Brave 1.97.57 is a Release channel desktop update. Stay on Brave Release unless you intentionally installed Brave Beta or Nightly. The GitHub release notes for v1.97.57 also call out an Android Chromium bump to the same 155.0.8059.80 line. Phone and desktop still update through separate stores and installers.
Why 1.97.56 is not enough anymore
If brave://version shows Brave 1.97.56 with Chromium 155.0.8059.40, you did the right thing last week. You still need 1.97.57 (or newer) for Chromium 155.0.8059.80.
Same habit every time:
- Update
- Fully quit and relaunch
- Prove it with
brave://version
Downloaded is not running. Read both the Brave version and the Chromium version on that page.
How to update and verify on a home PC or Mac
- Open Brave on the computer you browse on.
- Check for updates:
- Windows / Linux: Menu (three lines) → About Brave.
- Mac: Brave menu → About Brave.
- Stay on that page until Brave finishes downloading and offers a relaunch, or until it already shows 1.97.57.
- Relaunch when prompted. Do not click Later and leave old windows open for hours.
- If the version still looks old, fully quit Brave (every window), then open it again.
- Type
brave://versionin the address bar. Confirm:- Brave version 1.97.57 (or a newer Release build if Brave already moved past it)
- Chromium 155.0.8059.80 (or a later 155.0.8059.x if Brave ships another bump)
- Repeat on any other home PC that still has Brave installed, including the laptop that sleeps with Brave still open.
If About Brave says an update is coming but does not offer 1.97.57 yet, give Release a day, then check again. Staged rollouts are normal.
Android and iOS Brave are separate
Desktop Release notes are for the computer browser. Phone browsers update through Google Play or the App Store on their own schedule. A desktop Brave update does not patch Brave on your phone. If you browse in Brave on Android, open the store listing after this Chromium bump, update, then open the app once so the new build actually launches. iOS follows the App Store separately.
Do this / don’t do that
Do
- Force About Brave, relaunch, and confirm
brave://versionshows 1.97.57 with Chromium 155.0.8059.80. - Treat the Chromium .80 bump as “install today,” not “install when I remember on Sunday.”
- Keep Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Brave on their own update habits if you use more than one browser at home.
Don’t
- Do not stop at Brave 1.97.56 because you “already updated after Chrome 155.” That build was still Chromium 155.0.8059.40.
- Do not leave old Brave windows running after an update prompt.
- Do not skip the Chromium line on
brave://version. The Brave version and the Chromium version are both worth reading. - Do not wait for exploit details. Brave’s notes do not list individual Chromium bugs, and patching is still the job.
Bottom line
Brave 1.97.57 hit the desktop Release channel on October 14, 2026 and upgrades Chromium to 155.0.8059.80 (Brave latest notes, community Release post). That is Brave’s way of carrying Chrome’s mid-cycle 155.0.8059.79/.80 security set into the browser you actually launch. On your own computer: update, fully quit and relaunch, confirm brave://version. That is the whole job.
