Decommissioning old servers safely

Powering off is not decommissioning. Data remnants and DNS ghosts linger.

1. Confirm workloads moved

Dependencies love to surprise you.

2. Final backup

Keep a restore path for the retention you need.

3. Wipe disks appropriately

Especially if hardware is resold or recycled.

4. Remove from DNS, monitoring, and backups

Ghost alerts are how real alerts get ignored.

5. Update diagrams

Powering off is step one. Wipe disks, pull DNS entries, and update diagrams before the box leaves the rack.
