Tax season: protect the files accountants touch
CPAs and bookkeepers become high-value targets each spring. Harden the paths to returns and source docs.
From February through April, financial documents concentrate in a few mailboxes and folders. Attackers know the calendar.
Lock down the obvious paths
- MFA on email and any tax software portals
- No shared “tax” folders with Everyone / Company permissions
- Prefer secure portal exchange over email attachments when clients allow it
Backup the working set
Confirm backups cover the machines and cloud libraries where returns actually live, not just the file server from 2019.
Watch for BEC
Wire-instruction fraud spikes around payments and refunds. Verify changes out-of-band.
