VPN vs zero trust for small firms

When a classic VPN is enough, when it becomes a liability, and what “zero trust” means without the buzzwords.

By Michael NarehoodNetworking

A VPN is a tunnel, not a security strategy by itself.

When VPN still makes sense

  • A few people need file-server or line-of-business access
  • You already monitor the endpoint that connects
  • Split tunneling is intentional, not accidental

When to move on

  • Everyone is “on the LAN” with lateral movement risk
  • Contractors get full network access for one app
  • You cannot see or patch remote devices

Practical middle ground

App-based access (Microsoft Entra application proxy, vendor SaaS, etc.) often beats full-tunnel VPN for SMBs.
