Winter outage season: UPS and generator basics
Cold-weather power events take down offices that thought “the cloud” made on-site power irrelevant.
Cloud apps help until the office Wi‑Fi, firewall, or phone system loses power.
Minimum viable resilience
- UPS on firewall, switches, and the primary AP path
- Document what stays up for 15 minutes vs what dies immediately
- Know whether your ISP ONT/modem is on battery
Generators
If you have one, test transfer under load before storm season. Fuel, transfer switches, and “who starts it” matter as much as the hardware.
Cloud is not magic
Laptops on cellular hotspots can keep sales moving. Desktops tied to a dark switch cannot.
