Apple's new Mac mini and Mac Studio: what businesses should buy
Apple refreshed Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro, and Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Here is how the four desktops compare for SMB deployments.

Apple announced a full desktop refresh on August 25, 2026: Mac mini with M6 or M5 Pro, plus Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Preorders are open, and Apple says the new systems begin arriving September 22. The 512GB-memory Mac Studio configuration follows in late October.
The launch leans hard into local AI, but the useful business story is broader. Mac mini now starts with 2.5Gb Ethernet and modern wireless networking, while Mac Studio offers substantially more memory, graphics capacity, high-speed I/O, and display support. The hard part is buying the tier your workload needs without paying for benchmark numbers your staff will never exercise.

Mac mini: M6 is the default, not the compromise
The base Mac mini moves from M4 to M6, with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Neural Accelerators in the GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. It starts with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD; memory can be configured to 32GB and storage to 2TB. Apple claims up to 40 percent faster CPU performance and twice the graphics performance of the M4 model in its launch testing.
For most SMB desktops, the benchmark headline matters less than the configuration. I would treat 24GB memory and 512GB storage as a sensible starting point for a machine expected to last several years. The 16GB/256GB model can run ordinary productivity workloads, but 256GB gets cramped after applications, local mail, caches, and user data. Neither memory nor internal storage is something you should plan to upgrade later.
The M5 Pro version is a different class despite having a lower chip-generation number. Its base configuration has a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, with options up to 18 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores. It starts at 24GB memory and 512GB storage, with ceilings of 64GB and 8TB. It also replaces the M6 model’s three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports with three Thunderbolt 5 ports.
Both models gain Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two front USB-C ports, HDMI, and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, configurable to 10Gb. Both support as many as three external displays, although the exact resolution and refresh combinations differ. Apple’s current Mac mini specifications are worth checking against a proposed monitor layout before ordering.
Mac Studio: pay for measured demand
Mac Studio now comes with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. The M5 Max starts with an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB memory, and 512GB SSD. It can be configured with a 40-core GPU, 128GB memory, and 8TB storage. It supports as many as five external displays.
M5 Ultra starts with a 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 96GB memory, and 1TB SSD. The top configuration reaches 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, 512GB of unified memory, and 16TB storage. It supports as many as eight external displays. That memory ceiling is the important differentiator for teams running very large local models or datasets that simply cannot fit on a smaller Mac.
Every Mac Studio includes four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, and a headphone jack. The front has an SDXC slot and two ports: USB-C on M5 Max, or Thunderbolt 5 on M5 Ultra. Apple lists the exact combinations on its Mac Studio technical specifications page.
Apple also promotes clustering multiple M5 Ultra systems over Thunderbolt 5 using RDMA for distributed AI inference. That is interesting engineering, not an automatic small-business server strategy. A cluster needs supported software, repeatable workloads, monitoring, power and recovery planning. Do not build one because a launch slide made it look easier than cloud capacity planning.
Which one should an SMB buy?
Choose Mac mini with M6 for ordinary desk work, Xcode projects, moderate photo work, conference-room duty, or a dedicated Mac needed for Apple-specific build and management tasks. Spend on memory and usable internal storage before chasing the higher chip tier.
Choose Mac mini with M5 Pro when the job regularly waits on compiles, video exports, GPU work, or local-model inference, or when Thunderbolt 5 and more than 32GB memory solve a known constraint. It is the value option for demanding work that does not need Studio-scale memory or graphics.
Choose Mac Studio with M5 Max for a person who makes money with sustained creative or technical workloads: production video, 3D rendering, large software builds, scientific tools, or local AI models that need more than 64GB. It should be tied to a role and workload, not used as an executive-status desktop.
Choose M5 Ultra only after measuring. Its 512GB memory ceiling is unusual and useful, but most businesses do not need it. Capture memory pressure, render or build time, model size, storage throughput, and the cost of waiting on the current machine. If those numbers do not support the $5,499 starting price, the M5 Max or M5 Pro is probably the better purchase.
Owners of an M4 Mac mini or recent Mac Studio should not assume this launch creates an urgent refresh. Apple quotes large gains for selected AI and graphics tests, but a healthy system that finishes the actual job on time still has value. Upgrade when capacity, support, or labor cost justifies it.
Deployment details that matter after checkout
- Buy through the right business channel. Use Apple Business and Automated Device Enrollment so MDM ownership is in place during initial setup. A powerful unmanaged Mac is still unmanaged.
- Standardize configurations by role. Pick a small set of approved memory, storage, and network configurations instead of creating a unique build for every desk.
- Validate the network path. A 2.5Gb or 10Gb port does not speed up a 1Gb switch, old cabling, or slow NAS. Map the complete path before paying for the 10Gb option.
- Test displays and peripherals. Confirm resolution, refresh rate, docks, capture hardware, storage arrays, audio interfaces, and required drivers. A familiar connector does not guarantee every old workflow behaves perfectly.
- Pilot macOS 27 and business software. Apple is pairing the hardware launch with its upcoming macOS 27 release. Test VPN, endpoint security, backup, printing, identity, MDM, and line-of-business applications before broad deployment.

- Keep procurement separate from management. Apple’s consumer Apple Upgrade lease may fit an owner buying personally, but it is not a substitute for organization-owned purchasing, enrollment, lifecycle records, and clean offboarding.
Finally, size backup and recovery around the configuration you buy. A multi-terabyte internal SSD is not a backup, and cloud synchronization alone does not make it one. Test a full restore before the old Mac is wiped or reassigned.
Bottom line
The M6 Mac mini is the default business desktop in this lineup, especially with a memory and storage bump. M5 Pro is the practical step up for developers and creators who can use more memory, GPU capacity, or Thunderbolt 5. Mac Studio with M5 Max belongs on desks where sustained professional workloads pay for it. M5 Ultra is specialized infrastructure for teams that can name, measure, and support the workload requiring up to 512GB of unified memory.
Buy against the job, enroll it properly, and validate the surrounding network and software. The most expensive Mac in the catalog is not automatically the best-managed one.
