macOS Tahoe 26.7 and Sequoia 15.8: install Apple's September security updates
Staying on macOS Tahoe 26 or Sequoia 15? Install Apple's September 14, 2026 point releases (26.7 and 15.8) from Software Update, then confirm About. Separate from macOS 27 Golden Gate.

If you are not jumping to macOS 27 Golden Gate yet, you still have homework. On September 14, 2026 Apple shipped security point releases for the two previous majors: macOS Tahoe 26.7 and macOS Sequoia 15.8. Staying on 26 or 15 without those builds leaves known holes open while the Golden Gate crowd is busy with a major upgrade.
This is not an upgrade guide to 27. If you are moving to Golden Gate, use our separate macOS 27 Golden Gate update day checklist. This post is for home Mac users who are staying put for now and just need the security train.
What Apple released (and where to read it)
Apple’s Apple security releases list lists both point releases as shipping on September 14, 2026:
The same day’s list also includes Safari 27 for macOS Sequoia and macOS Tahoe (Safari 27 security content, also dated September 14, 2026). On a Mac that is staying on 26.x or 15.x, Software Update is usually how both the OS point release and the matching Safari security build arrive. You do not need a separate “Safari only” ritual unless Apple offers Safari as its own line item on your machine.
Secondary coverage from 9to5Mac notes that Golden Gate, Tahoe 26.7, and Sequoia 15.8 together address a very large vulnerability set (200+ across the day’s macOS security docs). Treat Apple’s pages as the source of truth for CVE wording. The practical takeaway for a home desk Mac is simpler: install the point release that matches the major you are staying on.
Who this is for
- You checked Apple’s Golden Gate compatibility list and decided to wait (apps, habits, or “not this week”).
- Your Mac is Intel-only and never gets Golden Gate. Security point releases on the last supported major still matter.
- Someone else in the house upgraded to 27, and your older Mac is still on Tahoe 26 or Sequoia 15 for day-to-day use.
If Software Update already offers macOS 27, that is a different decision. Declining 27 does not excuse skipping 26.7 or 15.8 when those builds are listed for your current major.
Install from Software Update
- Plug in a laptop and join a reliable network. Point releases are smaller than a major OS, but a drop mid-download is still annoying.
- Open System Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install what Apple offers for your current major:
- On Tahoe 26.x: look for macOS Tahoe 26.7 (or a 26.7.x follow-up if Apple supersedes it later).
- On Sequoia 15.x: look for macOS Sequoia 15.8.
- Accept Safari updates that appear alongside the OS build when Software Update lists them. Safari 27’s security note is aimed at Sequoia and Tahoe users who are not on Golden Gate yet.
- Restart when macOS asks. Leaving the reboot for later leaves the old kernel and frameworks running.
- After the desktop returns, open System Settings → General → About and confirm the version line:
- Tahoe stay-putters: 26.7 (or newer 26.7.x).
- Sequoia stay-putters: 15.8 (or newer 15.8.x).
If Software Update is empty on the morning of the 14th, wait and check again. Apple often stages files. Do not download a random .pkg from a forum thread because someone claimed it was faster.
Quick checks after install
- Open Safari once and confirm it launches cleanly. If About Safari shows a 27.x build after this train, you are on the security line Apple documented for Sequoia and Tahoe.
- Open a few daily apps (browser, mail, password manager, photo library) before you need them for something urgent.
- If Time Machine is on, let a post-update backup finish when you are next on power and Wi-Fi. A security point release is a good moment to confirm backups still run.
Do not confuse the two paths
- Installing 26.7 or 15.8 keeps you on your current major with Apple’s September 14 security work.
- Installing macOS 27 Golden Gate is a major upgrade with its own prep list (backup, free space, Apple silicon compatibility). That is the Golden Gate update day article, not this one.
- Skipping both because “I will do the big upgrade next month” is the worst option. Next month’s plan does not patch this week’s CVEs.
Multiple Macs in the house
Update every Mac that is staying on Tahoe or Sequoia, not just the one you sit at. Shared living-room Macs and a kid’s homework laptop still browse the same hostile web. Stagger reboots if someone needs a machine mid-afternoon, but do not leave a house Mac on 26.6.x or 15.7.x once 26.7 / 15.8 is offered.
Bottom line
Apple released macOS Tahoe 26.7 and macOS Sequoia 15.8 on September 14, 2026, with matching security documentation on Apple’s security releases list (Tahoe 26.7, Sequoia 15.8), plus Safari 27 for Sequoia and Tahoe (Safari 27). If you are staying on 26 or 15 instead of Golden Gate: System Settings → General → Software Update, install, reboot if asked, and confirm About shows 26.7 or 15.8. That is the calm stay-put path.
