Steam Frame reservations: $1,059 / $1,299, sign up before Sep 17
Valve opened Steam Frame reservation sign-ups. Home VR buyers: 256GB at $1,059, 1TB at $1,299, queue randomization after Sep 17, then purchase invites.

Valve put real prices and a reservation clock on Steam Frame, its next Steam VR headset aimed at living-room and PC VR. If you want one for home use, the important part is not another spec sheet. It is the sign-up window, the randomized queue, and what those dollar numbers buy.
Coverage from Digital Foundry and The Shortcut matches the Steam hardware page on the big consumer numbers below. Prefer Valve’s page if anything drifts.
U.S. pricing (Valve)
| Model | U.S. price | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Frame 256GB | $1,059 | Headset + Half-Life: Alyx included |
| Steam Frame 1TB | $1,299 | Same package, more onboard storage |
Digital Foundry also lists matching UK/EU (and other) price points if you are outside the U.S. Accessories are separate on Valve’s lineup (charger kits and fit/comfort packs in DF’s write-up). Budget the headset first; add straps and spares only if you already know you want them.
This is a premium home VR buy, not a casual impulse next to a $300 headset. If Alyx is already in your Steam library, Valve’s process still ties a copy to the Frame purchase rather than handing you a second giftable copy (DF notes that limitation).
How the reservation queue works
Steam Frame ordering follows the same pattern Valve used for Steam Machine interest lists:
- Sign up now on the Steam Frame hardware page for the capacity you want (you can register interest in more than one config).
- Sign-ups close about September 17, 2026 (DF: cut-off that day; some coverage specifies 10 a.m. Pacific). After the window closes, Valve runs a one-time randomization.
- You land in either a reservation queue (earlier purchase invites, with DF saying those units are expected before year-end) or a waitlist.
- When your turn hits, Valve emails a purchase invite. DF says you get three days to buy or lose the slot. First purchase emails are scheduled for September 18 per Digital Foundry.
Seeing “out of stock” on the store page before invites go out does not mean the product vanished. You are reserving a place in line, not checking out a unit today.
Fresh Steam accounts created only to game the queue are a bad plan. Reputable coverage notes Valve expects accounts in good standing with recent purchase history, the same anti-scalper idea used on other Steam hardware drops.
Should a home VR buyer join the queue?
Sign up if:
- You already live in SteamVR games or want Frame as a dual-purpose headset (standalone-capable hardware plus PC streaming, per launch coverage).
- $1,059 (or $1,299 for 1TB) fits a hobby budget without regret.
- You can watch email for a short purchase window and pay when invited.
Skip or wait if:
- You mainly want short Quest-style media sessions and do not want a four-figure headset.
- You need a guaranteed ship date on a credit card today. This is a queue, not Amazon Prime.
- You are still happy with a current headset and can let early adopters absorb day-one firmware drama.
Storage pick: 256GB plus microSD expansion is the value play if DF/Shortcut reports about expandable storage match what Valve ships. 1TB is for people who keep large standalone libraries onboard and dislike card juggling.
Do this before Sep 17
- Open the Steam Frame page while logged into the Steam account you actually use.
- Register interest for the capacity you would pay for (both if you are undecided and Valve still allows dual interest).
- Confirm the email on that account still works. The invite is the whole game.
- Decide your max price now so a 3-day purchase window does not turn into an impulse spiral.
- If you miss the Sep 17 cut-off, expect waitlist placement at the end of the line rather than a fresh lottery (DF).
Bottom line
Steam Frame is real money: $1,059 for 256GB and $1,299 for 1TB in the U.S., with Half-Life: Alyx in the box. The consumer move this week is simple. Sign up before the ~September 17 window closes, accept the randomized queue, and be ready to buy within a few days when Steam emails you. For official mechanics and regional pricing, start at Valve’s Steam Frame page and cross-check Digital Foundry’s reservation summary.
