The waitlist teaser is over. Google published a first look at Googlebook with real prices, five OEM models, and ship dates. Android Authority’s launch coverage fills in the OS story for people comparing these machines to Chromebooks.

If you only read our earlier Googlebook pre-order timing note, that piece was about the September 21 waitlist clock when pricing was still unknown. This one is the official launch sheet.

The short version

  • Five flagship models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo
  • Starting price: $899
  • Pre-orders: open now (Google Store, Best Buy, and select retailers)
  • Shelves: October 4 in the U.S., October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia
  • OS name: Googlebook OS (Android stack with Chrome OS foundations)
  • Baseline hardware: 16GB RAM minimum, touchscreens, premium materials, dedicated AI NPUs
  • Updates: up to 10 years of feature drops and security updates
  • Bundle: 12 months of Google AI Pro (5TB storage and Gemini Advanced tools), plus three months of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop

Five models, five personalities

Google is not building a first-party “Pixel Laptop” for day one. Partners are:

  • Acer: the only convertible (laptop to tablet)
  • ASUS: the travel pick at about 2.2 pounds
  • Dell: balanced size and display
  • HP: the design-forward thin-and-light
  • Lenovo: the 15-inch productivity workhorse

Android Authority’s model table puts Acer’s Googlebook 14 at the $899 floor, with several other configs starting around $1,199 to $1,299 depending on OEM and chip. Treat those as launch starting prices, not a promise that every storefront SKU matches the headline cart.

What Googlebook OS actually is

Chromebooks run Chrome OS and lean on the browser plus Android apps in a Chrome OS shell. Googlebook OS is pitched as an Android-first laptop platform that still keeps a full Chrome browser, desktop app habits, a real file manager, Linux support, and a terminal.

Phone continuity is a big part of the pitch: transfer settings and passwords from your Android phone, pick up tasks with Continue On, reach phone files and photos from the laptop, and cast phone apps into desktop windows. If you live on an Android phone, that continuity is the reason to care. If you do not, you are mostly shopping a premium laptop with a new OS badge.

Gemini features worth knowing before you buy

Google highlights three AI pieces that show up in the launch story:

  • Magic Pointer: wiggle the cursor and Gemini can work with what is on screen (text, images, context). Google says it is not watching constantly. It wakes when you summon it.
  • Rambler: speak your thoughts into organized notes with headings and action items (including mixed languages).
  • Create My Widget: describe a widget in plain language and have the system build it without coding.

Those are convenience features, not reasons to ignore keyboard feel, ports, or display quality. Try them in a store demo if you can. Do not buy solely because Magic Pointer looked clever in a keynote clip.

Specs that matter for a home buyer

Google set a high bar for what counts as a Googlebook:

  • 16GB RAM minimum (some configs go to 32GB)
  • Storage often starts at 256GB
  • Touch displays up to about 2.8K OLED on several models
  • Materials such as aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber
  • Processors from Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Snapdragon X Elite with NPUs rated above 45 TOPS
  • Battery claims up to about 14 hours of video or 16 hours of web browsing
  • Backlit keyboards, haptic trackpads on many configs, and the exterior Glowbar light strip

You still get Chrome with extensions, Play Store Android apps (with a curated large-screen section), and a full Linux environment for power users. That is more “desk computer” than a locked-down school Chromebook.

Chromebook vs Googlebook: a practical comparison

Question Chromebook habit Googlebook launch story
OS center of gravity Chrome OS + browser Android-first laptop OS with Chrome and Linux
Phone pairing Useful on many models Core launch pitch for Android users
RAM floor Often lower on cheap models 16GB minimum across the lineup
Price entry Can be far below $899 Premium floor at $899
Update promise Varies by model Up to 10 years called out for Googlebooks

If your house depends on a managed school Chromebook profile or a specific Chrome OS-only workflow, do not assume Googlebook is a drop-in. For a personal machine next to an Android phone, Googlebook is the closer cousin.

How to shop without overpaying

  1. Decide the job. Web, media, schoolwork, light creative work, or “I need niche Windows software.” Googlebook will not magically run every Windows installer.
  2. Match form factor. Convertible (Acer), light travel (ASUS), bigger screen (Lenovo), or design-first thin models (HP / Dell).
  3. Read the RAM and storage line in the cart. 16GB is the floor. Bump storage if you keep large photo and video libraries offline.
  4. Check return windows at Google Store or Best Buy before you lock a pre-order.
  5. Value the AI Pro perk, but do not treat a 12-month bundle as free forever. Calendar a reminder for renewal pricing.

Bottom line

Google’s official Googlebook launch puts five OEM laptops on the map from $899, with pre-orders open and U.S. shelves on October 4, 2026 (international markets October 5). Googlebook OS mixes Android, Chrome, Linux, and Gemini helpers like Magic Pointer, with a 16GB RAM floor and up to 10 years of updates. For home buyers, treat it as a premium Android laptop platform, not a cheap Chromebook replacement. Compare the actual SKU in the cart to the machine you need, and use our earlier pre-order timing piece only as history for how the waitlist teaser looked before prices landed.
