Windows 11 version 26H2 is available: how home PCs get the 2026 Update

Microsoft made Windows 11 version 26H2 (2026 Update) available on September 29, 2026 as an enablement package for eligible 24H2/25H2 PCs. How to turn on early updates, why 24H2 Home/Pro ends October 13, and why 26H1 is not the path.

Windows 11’s annual feature update for 2026 is here for eligible home PCs. On September 29, 2026, Microsoft announced that the Windows 11 2026 Update, also known as Windows 11, version 26H2, is available. The official how-to is on the Windows Experience Blog. Servicing details live on Microsoft’s 26H2 update history page.

This is the feature-update story, not another optional preview package. For the September optional preview and the 24H2 Home/Pro end-of-updates warning, see our earlier KB5124010 preview note. Do not treat that preview article as a substitute for moving onto a supported Windows 11 version.

What 26H2 actually is at home

For many eligible devices already on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, version 26H2 arrives as a small enablement package. Microsoft’s explanation: a lot of the code is already on the PC from monthly servicing. The enablement package flips the version and turns on the 26H2 feature set with a small download, a quick install, and usually a single restart. That is much lighter than an old-style full OS upgrade.

Microsoft is using a controlled feature rollout. Not every eligible PC sees the offer on day one. Safeguard holds can pause the update on devices where Microsoft detects a known compatibility issue. If Windows Update does not offer 26H2 yet, that can be normal. Keep checking.

Installing 26H2 also resets the support clock for supported editions. Per Microsoft, Home and Pro get 24 months of support from that install. Enterprise and Education get 36 months. For a home Microsoft account PC on Home or Pro, that reset is one of the practical reasons to take the feature update when you are eligible.

24H2 Home/Pro: October 13, 2026 still matters

If Settings → System → About or winver still says Windows 11 version 24H2 on a Home or Pro PC, mark your calendar. Microsoft’s lifecycle tables put end of updates for 24H2 Home/Pro on October 13, 2026. After that date, those editions stop getting the usual monthly security and quality updates for that version.

Version 26H2 is the supported path Microsoft is offering now for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices. If you are still on 24H2 Home/Pro, do not wait until the second week of October to discover Windows Update has nothing useful left for your version. We already flagged that date in the KB5124010 preview piece. This article is the “how to get 26H2” follow-through, not a rewrite of that preview.

How to get 26H2 on a home PC

  1. Confirm you are on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 (Settings → System → About, or Win + R → winver).
  2. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  3. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available (wording can vary slightly by build).
  4. Check for updates. When your device is eligible, you should see an option to download and install Windows 11, version 26H2.
  5. Let it install, then restart when asked.
  6. Confirm with winver or Settings → System → About that the version reads 26H2.

If the offer is missing, wait a day or two and check again. Controlled rollout and safeguard holds are real. Do not download random “Windows 11 ISO” packs from third-party sites to force it. Stick to Windows Update unless Microsoft Support walks you through an official media path.

Back up anything you care about before a feature update (photos, documents, browser bookmarks export). Feature updates are usually smooth. Having a restore point and a recent file backup still beats hoping.

26H1 is not your on-ramp to 26H2

A small number of newer PCs shipped with Windows 11 version 26H1, aimed at select new devices (Microsoft called out Snapdragon X2 series processors in the 26H1 support note). That branch is not how most existing home PCs get to 26H2.

Microsoft says 26H1 is based on a different Windows core than 24H2, 25H2, and the 26H2 feature update. Devices on 26H1 continue getting monthly updates on their own track. They are not expected to move to 26H2 in the second half of 2026. If winver already says 26H1, you are not “behind” on missing 26H2. Stay on monthly Windows Update and ignore internet advice that tells you to force 26H2 onto that machine.

Everyone else on 24H2 or 25H2: 26H2 is the feature update Microsoft is offering now.

Do this / don’t do that

Do

  • Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, then install 26H2 when Windows Update offers it.
  • Confirm the version with winver after the restart.
  • If you are on 24H2 Home/Pro, treat October 13, 2026 as a hard deadline to be on a supported version.
  • Keep monthly security updates current even while you wait for the 26H2 offer.

Don’t

  • Do not confuse this with the optional KB5124010 preview. That was a non-security preview, not the 26H2 enablement package.
  • Do not assume a PC on 26H1 (Snapdragon X2 path) should install 26H2 this fall.
  • Do not force unofficial ISOs because your PC is still in the controlled rollout queue.
  • Do not skip a file backup before a feature update if you have irreplaceable photos or documents on the PC.

Bottom line

Microsoft made Windows 11 version 26H2 (the 2026 Update) available on September 29, 2026 as an enablement package for eligible 24H2/25H2 devices (Windows Experience Blog, 26H2 update history). On a home PC: Settings → Windows Update, turn on earliest updates, install when offered, restart, confirm with winver. Home/Pro support resets to 24 months on install. If you are still on 24H2 Home/Pro, move before October 13, 2026. 26H1 is a separate Snapdragon X2 track, not the path to 26H2. That is the whole job.
