Apple’s everyday watch refresh this year is Apple Watch Series 12. Announced September 9, 2026, it centers on a new Health Sensing System, a readiness score, and the S11 chip, with preorders open immediately and store availability on September 18.

What the Health Sensing System is for
Apple describes Series 12 as delivering the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, with higher-frequency heart rate and heart rate variability sensing. The practical home-reader takeaway:
More frequent heart data while you wear the watch through the day and during workouts, which feeds Apple’s health and fitness features.
Readiness score. Apple positions readiness as a daily read on your body’s capacity to take on the day, informed by metrics such as sleep and recovery-oriented signals. Think of it as decision support for “push hard” versus “keep it easy,” not as a medical diagnosis.
S11 chip. Apple calls S11 its most powerful wearable chip for this generation and ties it to performance, new complications such as live Steps on the face, and upcoming Audio Intelligence features later in the year.
Battery. Apple says Series 12 continues to offer up to 24 hours of everyday battery life, and up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout (about 25 percent more workout battery than the previous model, per Apple). Charging is described as faster than before in the launch materials.

watchOS 27 timing
watchOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14 for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and it needs a compatible iPhone on iOS 27. Siri AI on watch begins as a beta on that same day for supported devices set to English.
If you keep an older watch for a bit, you may still get watchOS 27 without buying Series 12. Buy the new hardware when you want the Health Sensing System and S11 generation, not only because a software update exists.
