A home-buyer roundup of Apple's September 9 Surprise and Shine event: iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, AirPods 5, plus preorder and software dates.

Apple’s September 9, 2026 Surprise and Shine event was a hardware day aimed at phones, watches, and earbuds. If you buy Apple gear for yourself or your household, here is the short map of what launched, who each product is for, and when you can order it.

This is the overview. Deeper product notes in this same batch cover iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and AirPods 5. Prices and dates below come from Apple’s Newsroom posts unless noted.

Apple’s Pro Newsroom post lists storage from 256GB through 2TB for both Pro phones. Duo uses the same storage ladder and starts at 256GB for $1,999.

Who each product is for

iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone: a 7.6-inch inner display when open and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed, powered by A20 Pro. It is the novelty and multitasking pick, at a premium price, with a later October calendar. Wait for reviews if you have never used a book-style foldable.

iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max is the traditional flagship path: new camera hardware (including a variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera), A20 Pro, battery improvements, and finishes including an all-new burgundy. This is the normal upgrader lane if you want a familiar slab phone this fall.

No base iPhone 18 in this event. Apple’s Newsroom announcements cover Duo and the Pro models. Secondary coverage such as WIRED’s event roundup notes that a standard iPhone model was not part of this September show and is expected later. If you always buy the non-Pro phone, do not assume this event is your buy window.

Apple Watch Series 12 brings the new Health Sensing System, readiness scoring, and the S11 chip in aluminum and ceramic options. Starting at $399, it is the everyday watch refresh.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 keeps the adventure/outdoor Ultra brief, adds the same health sensing story, and starts at $799 with longer battery claims (up to 50 hours everyday use per Apple). Buy Ultra if you actually use the rugged tools; otherwise Series 12 is enough for most people.

AirPods 5 put open-ear Active Noise Cancellation at a $129 starting price, with a $149 Wireless Charging Case model that adds stem volume swipe and longer stated playback. Easy accessory buy if your current buds are aging.

Software calendar (same week)

Apple’s hardware posts also lock in software timing:

  • iOS 27 as a free update on Monday, September 14
  • watchOS 27 on Monday, September 14 for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later (with a compatible iPhone on iOS 27)
  • Siri AI rolling out as a beta with iOS 27 / watchOS 27 on September 14 for supported devices set to English, with more languages later

Update software before or alongside new hardware so features that depend on the new OS are actually available.

A simple decision order for home buyers

  1. Need earbuds only? AirPods 5 preorders are open now and arrive September 18.
  2. Need a watch? Preorder Series 12 or Ultra 4 now for September 18. Prefer Ultra only if you want the adventure hardware and battery story.
  3. Need a familiar iPhone this month? Preorder 18 Pro or Pro Max on September 12 for September 18 availability.
  4. Curious about a foldable? Duo waits until October 16 / October 23. Read the dedicated Duo piece and early hands-on coverage before spending $1,999.
  5. Waiting for a cheaper slab iPhone? This event did not announce one. Keep your current phone healthy and watch for a later Apple announcement.

Bottom line

Surprise and Shine delivered a foldable headline (Duo), a Pro-only traditional iPhone refresh, two Apple Watch updates with a shared health sensing push, and a more capable AirPods 5 at $129. Watch and AirPods can be ordered now. Pro iPhones open September 12. Duo follows in mid-October. iOS 27 and watchOS 27 land September 14.
